St. John Island Overview
Trunk Bay, St. John USVISt. John is a precious, quiet, relaxed Caribbean island of paradise. With half the island designated as National Parkland and no airport, the island treasures its serenity. The blend of West Indian culture and neighboring island influences creates an eclectic energy within the community. Good manners are a necessity for getting around comfortably. Known for its upscale, multi-million dollar vacation villa rentals with spectacular, breath-taking views and eco campgrounds, St. John is a gem in the Caribbean. St. John is very small compared to most islands with only three major roads that connect to many smaller roads. However, the mountainous terrain makes the journey from Cruz Bay to far East End take over an hour. Most of our beaches are easily reached by car or taxi, and then exploring far remote beaches can only enhance your island adventure.
Seagate Villa in Chocolate Hole

Seagate Villa viewWe are located in Chocolate Hole, only a couple miles from the town of Cruz Bay. We're on the South Shore Road and minutes from Cruz Bay's ferries, shopping and nightlife. Our location makes Cruz Bay easily accessible, while being able to relax in the solitude of the Chocolate Hole neighborhood. North Shore and South Shore bays and beaches are just a few minutes drive. The sunrises and sunsets on the ocean horizon, viewed from the deck, are inspiring and precious day after day. Click here to see our floorplan.

What to Pack

Seagate Villa viewPassports are not needed to enter the US Virgin Islands if you are a US Citizen. All other islands in the Caribbean now require a passport. It's now recommended all US citizens travel with a passport, but it is not required to land in St. Thomas or St. Croix or to visit St. John. If you plan on going to the British Virgin Islands (which we highly recommend) on a day trip, you will need to present your passport upon arrival back into US waters, since you are re-entering from another country.

ATM's are located in Cruz Bay and Coral Bay, and are pretty reliable, so it's not necessary to bring a lot of cash. From there, plan ahead for your daily needs. Most visitors find they bring too many clothes and unneeded personal items. Shoes (or just flip flops) and sun dresses for the girls and t-shirts and shorts for the guys are the standard dress here. If you dine at one of the finer restaurants, generally a fanicer sundress and shorts/shirt will do fine. Bathing suit coverups are required when you're not at the beach. Bring good walking shoes if you're interested in the many hiking trails St. John has to offer.

Since Seagate is fully furnished, all you need to bring are personal items, such as camera, sunscreen, and a hat. Groceries, film, sun block and other items may be purchased in Cruz Bay or Coral Bay. Also, drinks, ice, and beverages are abundant in both villages. A fold up rain coat helps for the tropical showers that pop up out of nowhere.

Transportation

Taxis on St. JohnGetting to St. John is actually quite easy, as many major airlines fly into busy St. Thomas every day. St. Thomas Airport Taxis will bring you to Red Hook, where you can catch the ferry to St. John ($12 each + $2 per bag). You will board a 20 minute ferry here ($6.10 each + $3 per bag) to take you to St. John. St. Thomas to St. John. The ferry leaves every hour on the hour from 7 am to 11 pm. (There is also a 40-minute ferry boat ride from downtown Charlotte Amalie, but the service is limited and not as dependable as Red Hook.)

There are taxis available to take you wherever you wish. We recommend taking an island taxi tour during your stay, as the drivers offer historical and statistical island info. as well as good stories. It is definitely more convenient to have a car at your disposal during the entire length of your stay. Four wheel drive is highly recommended, as the island roads can be unpredictable, steep and slippery. All St. John car rental companies are very familiar with our terrain and all vehicles are equipped for our roads. There are many St. John car rental agencies to choose from, all with comparable rates. We're happy to help you with suggestions and recommendations. You must have a valid U.S. driver's license and be at least 25 years of age with a major credit card to rent a car on St John. Reservations should be made in advance. Most St John rental car companies are located within Cruz Bay and normally open from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. But if you want to pick up your car later (because of a later arrival time on St. John), most will accommodate your request.

A very important note: we drive on the left in the US Virgin Islands, even though our cars, trucks, and Jeeps are US, with the steering wheel on the left. "Keep Left" is the most important mantra for driving in the VI. North Shore Road follows along the beautiful North Shore beaches within the National Park, taking you all the way to Maho Bay, and Annaberg, the most intact sugar plantation ruins on island. Waterlemon Cay is located here, too, a favorite St. John snorkeling area. There at least 12 beaches to explore and enjoy on North Shore between Cruz Bay Town and Waterlemon Cay, and no less than 8 hiking trails along this route. Only Cinnamon Bay and Trunk Bay offer concessions so make sure to pack snacks and water before heading out for the day. Centerline Road stretches across the top of the island eight miles to Coral Bay's main junction. Centerline is the only way to get in and out of Coral Bay, so it is considered the "main road" connecting the island's two main villages. South Shore Road, beyond the Marketplace, brings you out to Seagate. There are some really nice rocky beaches off of South Shore Road with great snorkeling.

Recommendations
